A life remembered

A legacy of love and faith

Born in San Antonio on August 20, 1943, Bill was a beloved father, family member, and friend. He will be remembered for his strength, character, intelligence, and the many memories he created with those who loved him. His life was marked by a deep commitment to family and service to others.

He leaves behind his daughters, Deborah Kay Swan and Donna Marie Swan, along with family and friends who will continue to cherish his memory.

A life on the airwaves

Service beyond the signal

For nearly seven decades, Bill shared his knowledge, leadership, and steady hand in service of the amateur-radio community and the people who depended on it.

Engineer and innovator

A Texas A&M University graduate, Class of 1965, Bill earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and became a registered professional engineer in Texas. He spent 44 years with Collins Radio and Rockwell Collins, overseeing major high-frequency communications programs for military and commercial use.

Building a radio community

First licensed in September 1957 as KN5MWC, Bill later held the call K5MWC and became a Life Member of ARRL. He helped found the Plano Amateur Radio Klub, serving as its early treasurer and president from 1975 to 1976, and helped establish Collin County ARES.

He went on to serve as Collin County ARES Emergency Coordinator through 2000 and as ARRL North Texas Section Emergency Coordinator from 2000 to 2010.

There when it mattered

Bill coordinated emergency communications during disasters, including the 1979 Wichita Falls tornado and Hurricane Ike in 2008. His service also reached Texas RACES, Army MARS, FEMA-related communications, and the ARRL West Gulf Division.

He remained active in radio organizations later in life, sharing his experience with fellow operators and mentoring the next generation of hams.

From local clubs to emergency response across North Texas, Bill helped build a tradition of communication, community service, and readiness that continues today.
